Unexpected Reactions!
Social Media Detox :)
Hi, I am a spiritual seeker, writer, cyclist, runner and computational scientist. I share stories, travel experiences, daily reflections, and habits that can help you discover yourself.
Hello friends,
I want to share my journey of choosing myself. Stories of sacrifice and selfishness have shaped my understanding of what a Good Life should be—and what it shouldn’t. Starting in 2025, I sent a heartfelt message to my friends, family, and loved ones announcing my decision to quit WhatsApp and Instagram as a social experiment—to spend more time with myself. The responses to my message were surprising, and some were entirely unexpected. Here’s what they had to say:
A break from social media isn't missing out; it's gaining time for what truly fulfils you
Hope all izz well, take care
I wanted to call you, knowing that you're doing well and in good health. (this guy never called)
Very good decision, I am also trying
Some people got upset because they could no longer track my last seen.
One guy had shared his academic achievement in the WhatsApp group, and while everyone reacted with a thumbs-up, I didn’t. Later, he came to me personally and told me the whole story.
Things that changed
Feel more secure because I have real people in my circles :)
I’ve learned to trust my advice and instincts while keeping a select few around—people I can openly share with, knowing they’ll offer the right support and guidance when I need it.No gossip, unnecessary talk, or intrusion into personal space.
Those who used to call me on WhatsApp stopped calling altogether, though some occasionally reached out on my phone number.
People now approach me and talk in the office instead of chatting on Whatsapp / Hangouts.
People who constantly posted status updates stopped complaining about their lack of productivity—they already knew my response. I’ve come to realize that while support from others is always welcome, it’s important to be mindful of who you accept it from. Not everyone has your best interests at heart, and looking back, I see that sometimes the support I received may have caused more harm than good.
I missed sending birthday and anniversary wishes, so I didn’t receive them from a few either. While I may be out of the loop now, I’m free from the burden of comparisons, the opinions of others, and the pressure of attending late-night cake-cutting parties.
I've built a home library filled with books I plan to read and learn from this year. My reading speed has increased significantly and continues to improve as I can stay focused for longer periods.
Thank you for reading and for being here with me. I always love to hear from you in the comments.
With love and hopes for wholeheartedness,

Stepping out of societal norms takes courage and a deep understanding for what makes a great life. Thank you for sharing this experience with us all.
