The Photosynthesis of the Soul
While watching a podcast, I wondered: Could our inner journey resemble the process of photosynthesis, like plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen?
6𝐶𝑂2 + 12𝐻2𝑂 + Sunlight → 𝐶6𝐻12𝑂6 + 6𝑂2
1. The Light Source
In photosynthesis, the input is sunlight - a raw, external, universal form of energy.
In meditation, the input is awareness - a raw form of energy.
Just as a plant turns its roots toward the sun, meditation is the act of turning our mind toward the light of our awareness.
2. Transforming Waste
In photosynthesis, the plant actively draws in carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere.
In meditation, the practice actively draws in your mental noise (anxious thoughts, stress, scattered focus).
Meditation doesn’t try to destroy or push away the CO₂ of your mind. Instead, it uses these thoughts as a key ingredient. By observing them with awareness, it neutralises their toxicity and uses them in a transformative process.
3. The Chlorophyll
In photosynthesis, the magic happens in the chlorophyll, which converts light and CO₂ into something new.
In meditation, the magic is the act of non-judgmental observation. This is the catalyst.
Your focused, calm attention is the chlorophyll. It’s the agent that allows the chemical reaction to occur, transforming the raw, chaotic inputs into something structured and useful.
4. The Internal Food Glucose
The purpose of photosynthesis is to create glucose (sugar). This is the plant’s food, its energy, its sustenance.
The primary result of meditation is clarity and peace. This is the food for thought that allows us to live, grow emotionally, and become resilient to stress.
5. Oxygen
A waste product of photosynthesis is oxygen. The plant releases this into its environment, and it’s the very thing that gives life to everything around it.
The byproduct of meditation is calmness, patience, and compassion. A regulated nervous system exhales these qualities into your environment, improving the lives of the people around you.
When I am at peace, I become a source of calm that allows growth and goodness to thrive. Let’s help one another make this planet a kinder, better, and more sustainable place- for ourselves and for generations to come - through every act of care, awareness, and support, no matter how small.
Each time you step out of your room, pause to turn off the lights and fans. Think of it as if millions were observing your actions. Such mindful habits/awareness, though small, awaken a deeper sense of responsibility toward Mother Nature and those who share this world with us.
