Post 2/12 : Rejected HR
In the past few weeks, I interacted with many people - some calling themselves VPs - while searching for a tenant for my house. Even though the house is vastu-compliant and has excellent amenities, several of them decided not to proceed. I want to mention one particular family (VP of an MNC) who came forward and agreed to the terms and conditions.
Being humble, I asked him to pay only a small token amount to block the house, and the family agreed. But the moment he paid it, his attitude completely changed. He began acting as if he owned the place - constantly demanding that we add or remove items, and changing his requirements every single day.
It felt like receiving a job offer overloaded with conditions. Eventually, I had to make a decision to put an end to this behaviour. The situation reminded me of that iconic scene in Chak De India, where the star player comes late and tries to overpower the coach.
We decided not to move forward with this family and immediately returned their token amount, a day before I vacated the house. For the first time, rejecting someone felt genuinely happy. His negotiating style left a very bad impression. Despite being professionally successful, he didn’t seem to know how to speak respectfully to someone who is 15 years younger than him.
I figured out why rejecting him made me so happy. It felt like the universe had a better plan waiting. On the very day I vacated the house, we found a new tenant that morning. The lessons learnt dealing with them are:
… your position and power don’t decide your destiny.
… negotiation is an art, but it should never replace humility and grace in human behaviour.
… my faith reminded me that when we surrender to the divine, things align effortlessly.
