Dear Friends,
Have you ever felt like you're following a set of instructions for life, a kind of Book of Law (Rulebook), that you never actually agreed to? It's a book filled with ideas that we picked up along the way – from our parents, friends and what we see around us. Things like how we should behave, what success should look like, and what's considered right.
We often follow this Rulebook without even thinking about it. We get attached to it. And when life doesn't match the rules, or when we don't follow them perfectly, we often feel disappointed and maybe even ashamed. It's a cycle that can just keep going, causing stress for no real reason. If you are trapped in this situation, please
✅ Pause for a moment ⏸️
✅ Write down these laws ✍️
Goal: Destroy the mindset that follows the Rulebook!
🏆 Bonus: Reflect on the past “rulebook activities” that hindered your progress.
I grew up hearing things like:
Only play with kids of your age; older kids might hurt you.
🫠Did they always?
Don't do this or that in a place of worship.
🫠Who made that specific rule, and why?You MUST save money in the bank for a rainy day.
🫠Is that the only way to be secure?Study hard, get the highest marks! That's the only way to get into a good college and land that high-paying job.
🫠Is it?Okay, you got into college... now you NEED that high CGPA, or you won't get the best job! So, we cram and memorise, maybe forgetting how to think or connect with people. Meanwhile, someone with lower scores but great communication skills often ends up doing well.
🫠Sound familiar? Then comes work: "See those people staying late? That's how you get promoted!" So, maybe we sacrifice our evenings, our health, our family time... often for a tiny raise, maybe regretting it later. And what about office politics? Often, the people at the top seem to be the ones who play the game best, not necessarily the ones who know the job best.
🫠How do we deal with the frustration that brings?
This list goes on and on. This Rulebook, created by others, can constantly make us feel like we're falling short if we don't follow it.
But here's the crucial part: To truly understand ourselves and find genuine peace or happiness, maybe the first step is to gently set aside that borrowed Rulebook. We need to recognise the social mask 👺 we wear – the version of ourselves we present to fit in and follow those rules.
The real journey starts when we dare to look underneath that mask and ask:
🙇Who am I? What do I value? What feels right and true for me, regardless of what the old Rulebook says?
